“WE WANT TO BE FAIR”
By Fred Wickert

In his speech last night on national television President Obama said we need to be fair. That is why, he says, that we must give five million illegal immigrants amnesty.

Oh really Mr. President? Fair to who? Ever since you took office Mr. President, we have had a very high jobless rate in this country. Most of those who cannot find jobs are middle class people. The ones your rhetoric always claims to be helping. By adding five million people to the list of those seeking those jobs, are you being fair to the middle class?

My late wife was born a foreign national Mr. President. She had to go through a long list of things before she was allowed to enter the United States, including an extensive background investigation and a physical examination in addition to a great deal of other red tape to satisfy the demands of the American Embassy. She finally arrived in the USA and soon was given a green card. She had to report every year where she was and what she was doing.

After a wait of six years she was able to apply for citizenship. The law says you are eligible after five years, but you have to be able to provide character references. One must have known you and seen you on a daily basis for a minimum of five years. You must have another with the same requirements for three years and another for one year. After arriving here you have to be here a year before you get to know anyone that well and see them on a daily basis. That is why it takes six years.

When she applied for citizenship we were living in Orlando, Florida. Soon, the Air Force transferred me to Maryland. Because she was my wife, she too moved to Maryland. That brought to a halt her application for citizenship because those witnesses do not see her on a day to day basis any more. That means the entire process is put on hold until you once again have those witnesses. When she re-applied, she was told she had to go to school for a while. It was required by the Daughters of the American Revolution or DAR.

The school was provided on Andrews Air Force Base where she was required to attend every afternoon, five days a week for about three months. The purpose of the school was to learn about American History, the Constitution and American government and current events as related to politics. By the time they were finished they knew more about American History and American Government than almost any college graduate, unless the college graduate was an American History major. Before she could become a citizen she had to pass a written exam on the subject, in English, demonstrating a sufficient knowledge of the language.

Tell me Mr. President, is granting amnesty, giving green cards and social security cards to illegal immigrants, treating my late wife and all those other naturalized American Citizens that followed the law and did it the hard way with fairness? Is it being fair to them?

I live in an area of New York State where the predominant radio station was originally started by General Electric Company. It is radio station WGY. A few years ago one of that stations news anchors was taking a leave of absence to go get his wife. He had married a Chinese College professor a little over five years before. It was a five year wait before his wife was allowed to come to the United States.

About seven years ago I was recovering from heart bypass surgery in Albany Medical Center in New York State. I had a wonderful nurse from the Philippines. She had married two months before coming to the United States. Her husband could not join her because he had to wait five years before he could come to the United States. Tell me Mr. President, is granting amnesty to five million people who came here illegally five years ago, fair to that radio news anchor and his wife, or that nurse from the Philippines and her husband and the millions of others in the same category?

I have a Canadian friend who came here because he married an American girl. They had children together. He is one of our Ourecho writers. He told me a few years ago that it cost him so far, more than $12,000 to get and keep his green card. His wife and children are American citizens. I have some Chinese friends who have gone through extreme measures and paid large sums of money to obtain a green card. These people have obeyed our laws. They have played by the rules. They have paid through the nose to INS and Immigration Lawyers. When you just give green cards and social security cards by executive order to five million illegal immigrants, are you being fair to them?

When you sign an executive order making all these people eligible for Medicaid/Obama Care, providing welfare and food stamps, providing a free education to their children are you being fair to the millions of us middle class tax payers who are footing the bill for all of that Mr. President?

Somehow Mr. President, I think you have missed something in the definition of the word, “Fair.” I don’t think Fair is why you did it all. I think it was a purely political move. You promised it to the Latinos in your first year of office. You had both houses of Congress in your pocket at the time and could have had it if you really wanted it, but you did not do it and you never asked for it.

You made a very eloquent speech Mr. President, but you have lied about almost everything you have ever talked about since becoming President. What you are saying now, I believe is a lie also. There is another election in two years. I believe you are trying to set the Republicans up to make them do something that will be costly to them in the next election. I believe it is strictly a political move and I don’t believe you have ever given being FAIR to anyone any thought at all. It just sounds good to say.
