MORE NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE
By Fred Wickert

Things keep happening. President Obama was on BET pushing his police training and racial profiling rhetoric. Erick Holder made a speech addressing investigations by the Justice Department in the two cases to determine civil rights violations. They are going to be impossible to prove but that wonít keep Erick Holder from trying. The woman chosen to replace Holder as Attorney General will be heading the investigation on the Garner case. Garners wife and Garners daughter both, when asked if they believed the actions taken by police were for racial reasons both said, ďNo.Ē They believed the police used excessive force.

When I wrote the last essay on this subject I did not know it, but I have since learned the task force supervisor when Eric Garner was taken down, was a black female officer. A black female officer was the task force supervisor and was giving the orders to the other police. Has anyone heard that fact mentioned in the media? I sure have not. How are they going to make it a racist case now?

In the last two years there have been a half million misdemeanor cases handled by NYC police. There have been shots fired during arrests 40 times. There have been 9 deaths. How many of them were black people? One. Yet, 73% of those misdemeanor crimes were committed by black people.

I donít know about you, but I think those numbers should give us something to think about. In a city of nine million people, in a two year period a half million arrests made for misdemeanor offenses. Shots were fired during 40 of those arrests. Nine people were killed and only one of them was black, but 73% of those arrested were black.

Those are the actual numbers from the record. Will someone please show me the police racism against the black community? Will someone please show me the police tendency to use excessive force and kill black people as compared to white people?

Yet the demonstrations continue and the violence seems to be escalating, particularly in California and the rhetoric of the President and the Attorney General is all about racial profiling. Holder said in his speech yesterday they are going to end racial profiling in this country once and for all. They are going to retrain police.

Nothing has been said, nothing at all about putting the family back together and teaching people right from wrong. Nothing has been said about teaching black youths what whites already understand, that when the police give an order to put your hands behind your back it must be complied with. No one has mentioned teaching black youths when the police say stop, they have to stop. No one seems to have given any thought to unemployment among blacks now being over 11% while among whites it is more like 5%. How about spending some money to make blacks have more employment skills so they can find jobs instead of teaching police not to racially profile. Those are the things that should be discussed but they are not. It might help to keep black kids in school instead of an approximately 50% drop out rate too.

I donít think Obama and Holder and Sharpton and the others want to heal the problem. I believe they want to keep it riled up. It is good for the politics of the Democratic party and it is good for the lining of the pockets of race baiters like Sharpton, Jackson, Wright and Farakhan who all make their living off of racial discontent. Obama leaves office in two years. Maybe he has figured a way he can make a buck off of it too.

One more thing I want to mention is that since 1999, over 80 NYC police officers have been killed while trying to make an arrest. At the same time, people think the take down used on Eric Garner was excessive force. Those cops are all just to mean! I wonder if those 80 dead ones were to mean too?
