PLEASURE OR EXERCISE?
By Fred Wickert

Today is New Year’s Day. When I got up this morning as is my habit, I turned on the news. The commentators checked in with someone who had been assigned to spend the night at the police station. He was reporting on some of the happenings there during the night.

There had been a group of demonstrators who entered the police station demanding more transparency of police procedures. It sounded to me that they really did not know or understand exactly what they were demanding as they were not being very specific in stating exactly what it was they wanted to be more transparent.

They became unruly and began interfering with police officers as they went about their duties. Finally police had to use pepper spray to disperse them and four of them ended up being arrested for resisting the police.

The reporter also mentioned a number of other calls the police had received during the night. None of them seemed very serious. Most were of people being too noisy on the streets and harassing people. There were a number of complaints of people relieving themselves in public; most of them were homeless people. Lastly, the reporter spoke of one call in which someone led police to a man who reportedly was in an alley pleasuring himself. One of the news crew commented that it gives a new meaning to the word pleasuring.

Hearing that, reminded me of something that happened several years ago. It was a case in which another word was given new meaning from the same type of action.

My wife and I took care of developmentally disabled adults in our home for 28 years, until she suffered a hemorrhagic stroke and we could no longer do it. One of these was an 82 year old man. His name was Francis. He suffered several problems, including a prostate infection and the doctor had ordered him to be in the hospital. I had to go to the hospital daily to see him, to learn if there was anything needed by the hospital in the way of history or information, and to report his progress to the State Developmental Services Office.

On one of those visits, one of the nurses told me Francis had given them a start that morning. She told me she came in the room to tend to him and that he was sitting on the edge of the bed with his feet planted on the floor and that he was masturbating. The nurse told me she asked him, “Francis, what are you doing?” She said he got a big grin on his face and replied, “I’m doing my exercise!”

I duly reported all of this to the state staff at the DSO. The case manager remarked to me and the DSO nurse, “It gives sort of a new meaning to the word exercise don’t it?” We agreed that it did.

Maybe the complainant, the police and the news reporter got it all wrong. Maybe the man was not pleasuring himself at all. Maybe he was just doing his exercise.
