POOF

POOF
By Fred Wickert

The phone was ringing. I made my way towards the phone but it stopped ringing before I got there, It had also stopped just before the answering machine could answer it. Whoever it was, I knew they did not want to leave a message.

When I got to the phone I picked it up to see the caller ID. Depending on who called, I might call them right back. I picked up the phone, hit the caller ID button and looked in the little window. Whaaaaaat? What is this? This canít be! I was looking at my name and my phone number. That was not possible. I didnít call myself, but there it was as plain as day. That was my name and my number on that caller ID.

I wondered if perhaps a phone company lineman was working on the line and hooked on the line with a portable phone just to see if it was working. I had seen that happen before.

After thinking about it for a while I called the phone company. I told the girl what happened. I asked if someone was working on the line and if the phone company was aware of the situation.

The girl at the phone company told me that was a Poof call. She said Poofing is what the phone company calls it, She explained that the call was a telemarketer. She advised that they know if they use their company ID people will not answer because they will know someone is trying to sell them something. To trick them in to answering the phone they somehow reverse the caller ID so it shows the name and number of the person being called.

The girl at the phone company went on to say that it happens often and the phone companies are aware of it. She went on to explain that they cannot do anything about it. She said that it should be illegal but unfortunately it is not.

This is the first time it has ever happened to me. I did not know there was such a thing. I had never heard of it until now. I wanted to make people aware of it so that if it happens to them they can refuse to answer the call. They can also handle it some other way if they choose. I just donít advise someone to do something that will get them in trouble. My advice, just donít answer it. The only reason they do it is because it works. If you ignore it and donít answer they may give it up because it is not working.
