AS TIME FLIES BY

He caught my eye each time
I did some shopping, the way
that homeless man looked
and dressed; hand-me-downs
and leftover garbage-bin clothes.

At times, his gait unsteady and
when the wind cuts like a scythe
I wince at the condition hes in.
Why is this old man spending
his time on the streets? others ask.
And the poor fellow looks sad
they must also be thinking aloud.

Today, I am going to take a stand
and ask him myself. Bold steps
bring me face to face as he turns
away and sits with his back against
the building. I sit myself down too.
Words escape my mouth as I say,
Dad, when are you coming home?
