As a Kid

we discovered before days
of smooth asphalt
riding bicycles on gravel roads
was a childhood destination

trying not to choke or
lose control, cars roaring
spitting a cereal pot of pebbles
and dust, muscles bragging
exertion in our pedaling,
a ritual from boy to manhood.

During times of rest these same
stones brought fun into play
skimming across the pond
where fishing was neat; not today
though since we had other plans.
Then fast-climbing
on the oak
tree at grandfather’s farm.

Day was tiring for pre-teen boys,
with more roughhousing
(after I won the tree contest)
then eating mustard
sandwiches Harvey brought, with
chunks of curd cheese momma
was sure to miss. Then home,
sweaty and so many words
around the supper table.

Sleep arrived before the moon came
calling; and I dreamt of road dust.
