Spring had sprung. The snow was gone. The ground under my feet was moist from
the melted snow. I walked across the deserted street. On the other side was a field with tall grass,
flattened by the winter snows.

On the other side of the field was a grove of spruce trees. I picked the tallest.
Under its shadow, I reached for the nearest branch, grabbed it and climbed from branch-
to-branch. Under the bark were bubbles of sap. My hands were soon coated with it,
giving me a better grip.

I reached the top. Only a few thin branches separated me from the top. If I went
higher, the thin top would snap and send me tumbling to the ground and possibly death.

I sat on a branch and looked down on the world.

Below me, I saw friends pass by. No one knew I was there.

In my child’s mind, I was the ruler. I was a king.

I was high above the world and ruled it.

“Michael! Time for Supper!” My mother called. My fantasy of safety was gone
for the moment.

I was a shy boy and often bullied. Being in the sky, high above the rest, gave me a
brief reprieve from their torture of bullies.

For a brief period of time, I was free.
