Another Rung

The man leaned over
and reached for another rung
once he was a child mewling and puking
as in the words of a Shakespeare Play

now hes older with cautious fingers
grasping new directions
each upward rung like steps
in life -- mobility

a single directive
for the next Chinese-made
aluminum step.

He remembers the strength
of teen-age fingers
ascending in excitement
knowing the rungs led somewhere
a braggadocio of muscled body
moving up the ladder
sureness as a hurrying step.

The rungs represent his climb in life
each with a testimony
of faith when stages of living were
successful in the climbing --

older age slowing in its reach
limbs wrapped in arthritic aches
got to keep going -- a poke in the ass
from his wife spurs him on.
