This story has been written about by Nancy Roberts,in her book "Haunted Georgia"of which i have(regretably)not read as of yet,i mention this because i have researched this story on my own and did not plagerize any of her excellent work. This is a sort of followup on my werewolf poem "The Werewolf"and is indeed the legend that prompted the writting of that poem. In Woodland Georgia, there is an old tale of a true life werewolf, her name was Isabella Burt,a member of a prominent family in Talbot county, Georgia. Isabella supposedly suffered from acute insomnia and would roam the country side at night killing livestock. A posse was formed to hunt the killer, unknown to the members of the posse,Isabella's Mother and sister also were following her, curious as to what Isabella did on her secret nightly walks. The story goes, that isabella's mother caught Isabella just as she was about to kill a sheep, also the posse had her surounded,a shot was fired and isabella lost a hand,Isabella was taken home, a doctor was summoned, she recovered and was later sent to Europe for treatment by a prominent physician(Freud?)who had experience in treating the disease of lycantrophy. Isabella died in 1911 and her ghost suposedly still haunts the area. She is buried in the Holmes/Owens cemetary in woodland,Georgia. |
