K. L. Farnum

Who am I? Well my name is Karan L. Farnum, I am the oldest of originally 9 children. Of course we were half and full brothers and sisters. In my life time I have had 2 mothers, and 2 fathers, all of which shared themselves with me and my brothers. I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1945. I was a beautiful baby, a twinkle in my daddy’s eyes. My father was in the service at the time of my birth, but got out soon after.
We moved to Florida soon after I was born, and I grew up there, along with my two brothers. We were passed around quite a bit while growing up, because of my sweet mother’s reoccurring health problems. She loved us very much but she was not a strong person. My father divorced her and we were put into a nursery for 2 years. It was not till my father re-married that we found another home. I was 6, my brother 5 and other brother 3. That lasted till I was 17, then I was sent to Utah, for an Aunt and Uncle to care for. That lasted all of 3 months. As they were elderly and they had no idea what to do with a 17 year old girl.

At the age of 17, I came back home to Florida and went to work at a cafeteria where my step-mother worked. I was living with my father and two brothers, and trying to care for them while my father worked. Needless to say I didn’t finish high school. While working at the cafeteria, one evening a young man walked back and forth in front of the place. I kept seeing him, and I thought I knew him. I told my mom he looked familiar.

Little did I know that when I was 16, I had a crush on this young man that lived down the street from us? Well to make a long story short, it wasn’t him, but it was his twin brother. I went outside after work and talked to him and was so surprised to find out who he was. We talked till my mother got off from work and we kept constant company till he left to go back to his ship in Hawaii. We courted for a year through the mail, till he got leave again. He came home, and we were married in January 1965. Our honeymoon was spent in Hawaii - Dreams do come true. I was blessed with a beautiful son in 1966. Our marriage didn’t last but our friendship has. He is my best friend.

I stayed in Florida for several years till my father passed away in the late 70s. While working as a nurse’s aide for 30 years I had always dreamt of living in the country, so when a friend asked if I would like to pack up what little my son and I had and come to Kentucky, I sat down and had a long talk with my son and we decided that it would be a good thing. I would have to find work and help with the expenses of course. It would be good for my son and I would possibly be able to do the things I had always dreamt of doing. I always said I was born 100 years too late. I loved quilting, canning, gardening, but most of all space. I was younger then and I even loved the snow. My best friends up here called us city farmers. A lot has happened over the years and my health has been affected. I used to love crafting, I loved building doll houses and the furniture, but I now have a problem with my hands, called Essential Tremors. That is why sometimes you will see mistakes in my writing. My writing to me is a gift from GOD. I have had a love for reading for as long as I can remember. But growing up, just never took the time, I love the old books, old movies, old lace. Guess it must be an age thing. I have many writers that I love, too many to name. I am not able to do the things that I once loved, but I do spend a lot of my time writing. If I see it, my heart has to feel it before I can write it. Like the fox in the field I saw before writing “The Laugh Is On You”. I don’t think I will ever write a book. I haven’t had anything published, but I did win a red ribbon for “Country Roads”, at the county fair once. GOD will lead me.

I have been blessed with three beautiful teen-age grandchildren. The LORD has been good to me. My son gave me the daughter I would never have had, had he not married his wife. I hope one day to move closer to them.

Well I hope this helps you all to get to know me. I know it has been a real pleasure for me to get to know all of you. I enjoy your poems and stories. There isn’t a day goes bye that I don’t cry, laugh, read in awe something someone has written. Thank you Scott, for OurEcho.
