I first met Mr.M.J.Ward when i was 10 years old,he was then married to my mother, and they lived as man and wife for 55 years.Massy never finished school because he had to go to work to support his mom and brother and sisters because his father had abandoned them due to getting in some sort of trouble with the local police, although i know the full story,or most of it,it is of no consequence to this story,it will suffice to say that his father was GTT (gone to texas)Massy worked in the golden foundry across the river from phenix city as far as i know untill he went out west to join his father on a ranch some where out in texas, and for about 10 years he was a cowboy,a sheep herder and a line rider and lived a life that people my age (66) can only dream about or see in a western movie.
When he returned to alabama,he soon found himself drafted into the army airforce and spent the next 4 or 5 years in the military as a jeep driver for the C.O. of the company (or wing) that he was assigned to.
I an told that he participated in the battle of the bulge some where in france.
he has also mentioned the buzz bombs that hit england during hitlers blitz of that country during the 2nd world war.
The purpose of this story is to inform people that in order to be a hero, you dont have to be in the news paper or on the world news, there are those out there that are every day heroes, those that go to work every day to support thier family, those that take in orphans and raise them and love them as thier own child, those that contribute to the needy and destitute, those that are always just "there" for us.Those are the true heroes of this world, for anyone could be a hero if the right conditions arose, but to go day in and day out as steady as a rock, that takes the real guts, that takes real nerve those are the true every day heroes of this world and in my life,Massy Julian Ward was just such a person.
And Massy, just in case you can see what i am writing,I love you man.your son,Bobby O.Mitchem
