Another tale told to me by my Dad:
Uncle Willie, having been away to serve in the war of northern aggression, was on his way home for a brief visit with his family and to make sure every thing was ok with them, they were expecting him to come tomorrow, but he had had an unexpected break and had got to leave his regiment early,he congratulated himself for his luck as he rode his horse along the dirt road only a few miles from his home, anticipating a warm welcome and a hot meal when he got there, smiling to himself at how surprized they would be to see him ride up tonight instead of tomorrow evening as they expected. It had been threatening rain all day,and now,as he neared his home,it began to pour.Up ahead,he spied the welcome sight of the mount carmel methodist church house and decided to stop for awhile in the shelter of it's porch, spuring his horse forward,he galloped up to the church and quickly dismounted and bounded up the few steps to the relative dryness of the shelter,he was surprized to find the front door open, and swinging in the wind that had came with the night storm, squannnnk! it creaked as the wind pushed it a little further open, uncle willie peered into the darkness of the empty church at the long rows of empty pews and up front to the pulpit,a flash of lightening showed a figure dressed in a long flowing robe! What the devil?! he thought, what or who is that? The lightening flashed again and the figure had moved up the aisle of the empty church a few feet closer to uncle willie, uncle willie thought he was imagining this,it couldent be a GHOST!With this thought, uncle willie leaped for his horse, and started to gallope away down the road, the figure in white leaped upon the horse behind uncle willie and grasped him tightly around his waist,so tight that willie couldent breath! he was scared to,to think that death had jumped on his horse and was riding him to hell! His horse headed stright for home with the unerring ability of horsedome at finding his stable, riding into the front yard, uncle willie fell into the arms of his wife who had heard the horse galloping down the road and had ran out to see who it was, uncle willie had passed out from a combination of lack of air and fear, his wife, realizing that it was sarah jane,a poor woman whom had lost her senses from the loss of her husband in the war,and thinking uncle willie was her lost husband had simply jumped on the horse to ride home with him. This was not the home coming uncle willie had anticipated.the end...
