Shopping Day

Hers is a slow shuffle of
movement
an overweight purse in hand
gray-haired lady
on a mission of necessity
sidewalk activity like
painted strokes up and down
King Street
along Ridout to Main

steady arthritic marching to
Derringer’s Meats
downtown Hamilton
a destination for her shopping
menu today

inside business as usual
nice German chocolate
chicken thighs
and 12 grain bread
browses the aisles selects
other packages and
cans of food for pussycat

hurries to her apartment
a desperate “Meow” awaits.
