It was my day off
and i thought i'd rest
but the wife came in
and made her request,

The grass in the yard
is three feet tall
get out there now
and cut it all.

I looked at her
and then i said
i cant today dear
i have a painful head,

She gave me a look
that i knew too well
and i knew right then
she was about to yell.

So i got up
with a mournful groan
and shuffled outside
to cut the lawn.

I went to the shed
and opened the door
and looked at the monster
we call a lawn mower.

I checked the filter
and likewise the oil
put on my work gloves
and got ready to toil.

I pulled on the cord
the mower gave a tired sputter
smoke boiled out
and i began to mutter.

I checked the belt
and the crank shaft
and everything mechanical
fore and aft.

I yanked and i pulled
for an hour at least
again checked the motor
of that little beast.

I begged and i pleaded
to all the saints
but to no avail
no one answered my complaints.

I wiped the sweat
from my tired brow
and sat down to consider
what to do now.

When the wife came out
on her way to the store
and ask did i ever
put the gas in the mower?
heh heh heh
