January, 2006 Each month OurEcho donates to a charity as a another way of thanking those that post. Our January 2006 charity is Heifer International. If you haven’t heard of Heifer, it is a remarkable organization. My mother first introduced them to me several years ago. That year as part of my sons’ Christmas presents, she donated a pig and a llama in their name. It was a great way to introduce them to the spirit of giving. Heifer brings a unique concept to giving and sharing. Through gifts of livestock and training in agriculture and environmental techniques, Heifer helps people leave the desperation of poverty behind and build new lives for themselves and new futures for their families. Across the globe, Heifer donors, volunteers, staff and project partners strive daily to build communities, distribute resources fairly, improve access to education and preserve our environment. In Afghanistan and refugee camps in Pakistan, they are supplying hungry people with Fayoumi chickens, which are appropriate for the arid conditions and scant resources there. In the high Andes, they use alpacas and llamas for wool and packing power. They have used elephants in Thailand and camels in Tanzania. Hungry families from Appalachia to Zambia have used Heifer Livestock and training to alleviate hunger and poverty and become self-reliant. Heifer's unique approach also promotes strong communities, sustainability, environmental protection and peace. From Chinese silkworms to Nepalese water buffalo, Heifer has learned that no resource is too small or too large to help lift families from hunger and poverty. As part of our commitment to giving, OurEcho (through Member of the Band, LLC) donated the following: A share of a llama - $20 A share of a goat - $10 A share of a sheep - $10 A share of a pig - $10 I encourage you to donate generously. |
