I am a freelance writer from Nacogdoches, the oldest town in Texas. I have written songs( the Don McHan Band recorded "the Distance Between His Hands" on Power Of Truth Records), haiku, tanka, senryu, free verse, children's stories, rhyming poetry, greeting cards, etc. But enough of the resume, as thankful as I am to have one. In the end, writing is more than the number of bylines one can accumulate. It's about connecting with yourself, nature, other people, and God. It's digging deep. And I've learned that I don't make progress unless I study and contemplate the works of those who are "masters" in their particular fields. I admire many writers, past and present. Some of my favorites are Hank Williams, Sr., Harlan Howard, Basho, Buson, Issa, Rumi, Kris Kristofferson, Kirsty Karkow, Michael McClintock, Kahlil Gibran, William Butler Yeats, Billy Collins, Li Po, Saigyo, Don Schlitz. Quite an eclectic bunch. My favorite singer of all-time: George Jones. His singing has a depth of feeling to it that is almost other-worldly. When it comes to poetry, I like this George Sand quote: "He who draws noble delights from sentiments of poetry is a true poet, though he has never written a line in all his life." A world of true poets -- one can only "Imagine" what a world that would be. |
