Climb to the Top

Sleek and fleet, he speeds like
a greyhound down the road of life.
No time to stop, to sip lemonade,
read a bestseller, or sing a song.
He must climb the longest ladder,
reaching out for success, no loving wife,
no child, nor pet—all ominous signs.

As he passes by, hands reach out,
voices echo, eyes fill with regret.
Lean and hungry, he never slows,
not on sizzling summer days,
nor crystal nights in winter’s grip.

“Most Likely to Succeed” his
yearbook said. He proved them
right, as he climbed on by
every friend he’d ever had.
It was only at the ladder’s top
where he found the depths
of loneliness, the quiet ache,
the solitude--the misery of
his own hard-won success.
