Rice Planting Time in Korea, 1945

When it’s Rice Planting Time in Seoul, Korea
Back in “45”

Two Korean neighbors
Hou Soong Yun and Hai Chon Lee
Had prepared their paddies
For rice planting doncha see,

They had asked some friends
Dok, Kin, Lunn and Chee
To their mud hut for
A planting party.

Saki was on the table
Tiny cups placed under a cloth cover
A little Saki before you start
More when the job is over.

Yun and Lee place the plant bundles
Around the inside of the dikes
The helpers plant them one by one
Hoping for a bumper crop of rice.

Push each plant into the mud
Keep the rows about 8 inches apart
If you run out of plants
There’s plenty more, here in the cart.

When the planting is finished
Come into my hutch
There’s plenty of Saki
We thank you so much.
