School Superintendent

Visit of Phillip Higdon

(BUTLER COUNTY SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT)

Students let me have your attention
Be on your best behavior today
The School Superintendent
Is headed Chelsea School way.

There will be no whispering
Or asking to go to the toilet,
Stay in your seats
Now donít forget.

We dusted all the erasers
Picked up all the tiny bits of tablet paper
Straightened the rows of desks
For thirty minutes we did labor

Everything had to be just so
Nothing out of place
Coats and overshoes made neat
All had a certain space

There was a knock
Miss Sager opened the door
We all watched the teacher
As she and Mr. Higdon walked across the floor.

He took a seat by the east window
As he sat there all alone
Miss Sager and Mr. Higdon had a conversation
In whispered tones.

Miss Sager said
Let me have your attention
I want each of you to tell
Something youíve learned today to Mr. Higdon.

This came out of nowhere
I was ill prepared
I couldnít think of a thing to say
Man O Man I was scared

The others went ahead of me
Thank goodness I was last
But my time came
To darn fast.

I donít remember the dumb thing I said
I was frozen to my desk
I could think of nothing
Why in the heck did she ask?

I mumbled something
And sat down
Miss Sager looked at me
On her face was a frown.

Mr. Higdon gave a short talk
Then he headed for the door
I heaved a big sigh of relief, but
I had an idea of what I was in for.
