Wonder what Dad thought?

When the soil preparation is over
And the seed is in the ground
Then the field turns green
As the young plants there abound

I wonder what Dad thought?

As the days go by
And each seedling seems to thrive
Thoughts of paying off the mortgage
Could this be his main drive?

I wonder what Dad thought?

As that wheat grew daily
Thoughts of harvesting was on his mind
Wind, hail and excess rain
Could put the crop in a bind.

I wonder what Dad thought?

One year it was “Hessian Fly”
The next it was “Rust”
Then there was “Chinch Bugs”
Then a drought, the crop turned to dust.

I wonder what Dad thought?

Several years with each new crop
Made enough to pay the interest on the mortgage
Pay for the gasoline for the threshing machine
Barely a living wage.

I wonder what Dad thought.

Those old Farmers
Were a hardy lot
The kids weren’t allowed to know
What your Dad thought.
