The Mennonite

Melvin rises at the yoke
of dawn,
listens to the quiet
son curled up alongside his
wife, touches her lovingly

cat yawns, stretches
readying for adventures
yet to be named.

Melvin spends most
of his morning preparing
‘chop’ for pigs, then cleans
the barn, walks horses

lunch is a restful pause.
Tractor needs fixin’
three year old Bud cries
for attention and Dora must
go to town. Trading
for pigs buys clothing.

As day slips into evening
there is satisfaction--
land, woman, son. Wiping
his brow emotions ease
down his cheeks, sundown

lighting up the western sky.
Behind a drift of shadows
comes a smiling.
