Slip Slappin' Along

Heard a familiar voice
in the middle of our early
walk. Sounded like a croak
a dry throat perhaps
defining itself
in the person of an old friend

I could not believe
her stumbling in our direction
wife and I on a
morning exercise walk.

Dressed like a bag lady
the former
neighbour moved closer
into our space with
shoes or should I
say worn-out beach sandals
slapping against asphalt
as we hailed, ‘Hi Rose’

continuing our walk
afraid neighbours may see
friendship once existed
and guilty heartbeats
matching tunes
from our departing footsteps.
