Army Mess Menu July 4, 1946

For the NCO’s of the 29th.
This menu gave us a thrill
For now we could have something other
Than the regular Army swill.

From the SOS (Chipped Beef on Toast)
To having gravy slopped on your peaches
To the powdered eggs, and milk
Delivered by sweaty hairy arms that reaches

Across the stainless steel vats of non-recognizable
Prepared slop we were supposed to eat
Of so called Chicken “try to see”
To the red stringy coarse horsemeat.

This was a day to remember
For Don, Monte, John and Ed
This to be such a diversion
From the mess that we were regularly fed

We grabbed our mess trays
With obvious glee
Hurried to get in line
Doncha see.

For at the 29th. General Hospital Mess
Fourth of July, nineteen hundred forty six
We’re going to enjoy a good meal
Right down to the Giblet Gravy mix.
