El Dorado’s Smells

From the odor of Talcum and Shaving lotion
As you walk past Sullivans Barber shop
The smell of fresh buttered popped pop corm
Coming from the Eris Theater, made you want to stop.

The smell of those hamburgers on the grill
Coming from the door at “Mary’s lunch”
The odor of shoe polish as you passed “Garlands Shoe Shine Parlor”
Really packed a punch

The odor of those Veals with chili
Wafting through the screen
Of the café door
Across Main St., at Londeen’s.

The new clothes smell
From the doors of Lasaters and Haberleins
Our two mens clothing stores
As you head down south on Main

But the smell that was the best
The one smell that was a must
Was when you stood outside
And sniffed those fresh baked loaves of Golden Crust.

That old S & H bakery
West on a numbered street
Left you with the smell of that fresh baked bread
That as a youngster, I thought was such a treat.
