Marie

In my mindís eye you
stumbled across
a smoke-filled passage
desperate for air

crawled on tired knees
afraid to take
a breath but you did
the heat scorching

fire advancing rapidly
flames delicious for
a victim
house burning.

Not long ago you
nursed others
at hospital emergency

and worrying about
a husband often careless
with leftover butts
after lights-out.

Youíre not just a memory
dear one. I still
see your face
that special smile.
