Chasing the Wind

Cautious hooves pause
within morning’s misty silence,
and a deer gathers strength
within the lamp of his inheritance

nearby, others share this habitat
jealous for his flesh

quickly launching hoofed feet
young buck crosses ridges,
sheltered ravines, a deadly race
from three coyotes as shadows in
the forest, anxious for a taste
of fresh kill

the escape continues across
clear-cuttings, down ancient trails
muddying cool streams,
and during a pause disappears

pursuing hunters tested by a majestic
foe, bested by this noble Prince.
