My Best April Fool Prank

In 1970 Roz and I spent a weekend at a friend’s summer home in Carmel, California. We had only been married a few weeks and it was like a honeymoon to us.

When we got there, we found it to be a charming little house with a view of the ocean. The house had a living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. It also had a large screened in porch.

As soon as we got there Roz used the bathroom and
I went out on to the porch to check the view. After a few minutes I sat down and picked up an old Reader’s Digest magazine.

I should explain that I have always loved the old Reader’s Digests and had gotten into the habit of glancing at the page number when I put the magazine down in order for me to pick up where I left off.

I read a couple of articles and few of the submissions to “Life In These United States”. Always one of my favorite sections.

A few minutes later Roz came out onto the porch and it was my time to use the bathroom.

When I came out she had the copy of the Digest in her hand and said, “Chuck, you will like this excerpt.” As soon as she started to read it to me I interrupted her and said, “Hey, I remember that, it was in the March 1937 Reader’s Digest on about page 34 at the lower right had corner of the page.”

Needless to say, Roz was dumbfounded and immediately began to look at the front cover and then the page number as well as the placement of the article. She said, “I know you have a great memory, but this is ridiculous.”

I just said, “Hey if you got it, you got it.”
It wasn’t until the next day that told her what I had done and since it was April Fool’s Day all was forgiven.
