Heading South

Iím Heading South

Thereís a change in the weather
Went from hot to cold
Itís the first day of winter
By my instincts I am told

When I awoke this morning
Could hardly move my feet
My bill was frozen shut
I couldnít even tweet

My wings were held tight to my body
Trying to capture a little heat
Needed my winter underwear
My beak as white as a sheet.

Packed my suitcase
Closed up my nest
Thought heading south
Would be the best

Thing for me
While I wait for other early birds
Down here in plain sight
Standing here on the curb.

I put on my stocking cap
To protect my head and ears
Packed several kinds of seeds
To fill my tummy when lunchtime nears

When the weather gets warm
Iíll fly back and open up my nest
After all these winter storms
Iím sure itíll be a mess

Forget it
Iíve changed my mind
I love it here in the south
I can stay warm all the time.

24/7 I can tweet
No more cold feet
No more frozen beak
Iíll so love the constant heat.
