Standing on the Bridge at 2 AM
in the distance I hear a sirene wail
floating up from the River below
there is a dark dank fishy smell

The River is not as friendly at night
or so to me it seems
I can hear it gurgling to itself
as if troubled by bad dreams

I have crossed this bridge a thousand times
in the bright light of day
and never given it a second thought
that it could change this way

I think to myself that one misstep
could send me tumbling into space
and into that dark gurgling water
to be enfolded in it's watery embrace

I tell myself that I should go home
that this is not a good place to be
I shudder with a sudden cold chill
and resume my walk, and the river calls after me
