Jiggs

Jiggs

Jiggs

Muggs, Billie, Skippy and Jiggs
Three Collies and a German Shepherd
Jiggs was my guardian
When a Hobo was about to step into our yard.

A red or blue bandana
Tied around their head
Wrapped in their bindle
Makeshift rags for their bed

Mom had me take a sandwich to any hobo
Who came walking off Highway 13
On a hot summer day
Ambling up our lane.

I think the hoboes marked our house
We had one almost every day
They would yell in from the front yard
Right off the highway

Jiggs would growl at the hoboes
Heís pace them as they walked by
Never barking or leaving the yard
Always kept a watchful eye

When I delivered the sandwich
Jiggs walked close by my side
If that Hobo had grabbed me
Iím sure he would have died.

Old Jiggs finally passed away
As a kid I did not realize
That Jiggs was in a word
Protecting my life

Jiggs Iím sure youíre in doggie heaven
There is something I want to say
Thank you for protecting a seven-year-old
Thank you for keeping the hoboes at bay.

I probably wasnít in any danger
But you watched closely
Looking for trouble
Watching out for me.

Jiggs this much to late
But you I will never forget
I remember you like yesterday
Youíre one of my favorite pets.
