Finally, a short story by Chuck...

A Doggie Whodunit
By Chuck Dishno
March 2013

I have written a few stories about my faithful old dog, Budget. He was born in 1956 and this story takes place when he was in his twilight years. Budget lost his right eye in 1960 while trying to romance a girl dog in the middle of a busy street. I guess, when you are in love, you don’t always look out for speeding cars.

The incident that I am writing about at this time occurred in the winter of 1965. Budget’s favorite place after a day of roaming the neighborhood and visiting my Mom who lived a few blocks away, was to sleep in front of a blazing fire in the fireplace.

Budget, was lying on his side and snoring in a deep sleep when he let out an audible “poot”. He immediately woke up, raised his head and with his one eye looked around the room at each of us, apparently trying to see who had interrupted his dreaming. Not satisfied, he then raised his stubby tail and looked under it, let out a sigh then promptly lay back down and went back to sleep.

I think he must have said to himself, “Oh well, there are just so many things you can blame on a human.”
