Gettig Up There

Getting up There

When you’re growing older
Your hair turns to gray
You walk with a limp
Have trouble hearing what people say

Those old joints
Rattle and grate
Old Arthritis
Just couldn’t wait

Sugar a little high
Cholesterol too
But with a dozen pills
I‘ll make it through

Think positive
Keep a smile on your face
Be pleasant
You’re a part of the Human race.

You were young
Many years ago
Things weren’t smooth then
Doncha know

WWII, Draft
Off to war
Away from home
Far to far

You took care of business
Found things about which you could laugh
Even when you felt
You had been given the shaft

We “gravel agitators” had
A language of our own
Everything abbreviated
Some overblown

M1, B-A-R
T.S., Mess,
OIC, FWT
For breakfast SOS

War’s over
Back to Civilian life
Some guy took your best girl
Now she’s his wife

You can deal with this vicious cycle
It’s played out every day
All over the world
But you have to live to play

Do the things while you’re young
Whatever your plan may be
While you can still enjoy it
Young and “Fancy Free”

I didn’t do everything
That I would like to have done
But I have seen a lot
And I feel I have won

A few days ago
I passed age 87
I have been lucky
On to 97?????
