The Orchard House

The Orchard House

Years ago
Back in O three
Peter and Bessie Mae were wed
A simple ceremony

Bessie Mae’s Dad
Gave them a new home
As a wedding gift
Just off the county road

A small home
Two bedrooms upstairs
A large kitchen and parlor
Downstairs

Placed in the middle
Of orchard trees
Bearing several kinds of fruit
It was Peter’s job to oversee

He hand carried water
To each and every tree
Took up all the trash
And cut down all the weeds

Things were going smoothly
For many many years
Then things started to happen
Things every fruit man fears

In one season
It started to snow
Temperatures dropped below freezing
For a week or so

This happened
While the fruit trees were in bloom
For Bessie Mae and Peter’s future
Doom did loom.

Bessie Mae’s father
Passed on one day
A cyclonic wind
Blew their garage away

Peter and Bessie Mae
Had to find a job
With no fruit to sell
This meant leaving “Gobblers Knob”

The State took over the farm
The taxes were in arrears
The farm was auctioned off
As Peter and Bessie Mae’s eyes filled with tears

The field mice moved in the house
Came in through the door
Now the field mice occupy
The first and second floor

Why such a sad story
This is real life doncha see
Many dreams are broken
Out here in the country.

Life is not a “bed of roses”
As Peter and Bessie Mae found out
This may not be the norm
But this is what country living is all about.
