A STRANGE SUNBEAM
By Fred Wickert

I am 80 years of age. I have served 20 years in the military and have seen a lot of foreign service. I have traveled all over this country. I have been a police officer and a truck driver. I have seen a great deal and experienced a great deal. Even so, I have never seen before something that I experienced yesterday, March 6, 2014. I have no idea what to make of it but I will explain it to you and see what you think about it.

Truly, if anyone who reads this knows what I was seeing I will appreciate it if you will tell me because I am baffled by it.

Yesterday afternoon I started for Oneonta , New York from Gilboa, New York. It is a weekly supply trip that I have been making for more than 20 years. It involves driving South on state Route 30 for 4 miles to the hamlet of Grand Gorge, then turning West on state Route 23 for the next 36 miles. I made my turn on to Route 23 in Grand Gorge and proceeded through the village. Once outside the village or hamlet, I came to the 55 Mph zone and sped up accordingly.

The sun was low in the sky and pretty much in my face and I put on my sun glasses and continued on my way. Just outside of Grand Gorge is when I first noticed it. Mount Utsayantha was on my left as I drove towards Stamford. That is where and when I first noticed it. There was a beam, almost like a laser beam from the sun to the left front of the hood of my car. Where it landed on the hood of the car it was about a half inch in diameter. Four feet away from the car the beam had widened to an inch in diameter and 20 feet away the beam had grown to about 4 inches in diameter. As it continued to the sun it appeared to have achieved as much as perhaps 8 to 10 inches in diameter and then as far as the eye could follow it toward the sun it never appeared to get any bigger in diameter. The last six feet or so from the car the end of the beam of light curved to where it struck the car but seemed to be perfectly straight the rest of the way to the sun.

Maybe the light beam ended some place in the sky. I donít know, but it certainly looked like it continued all the way to the sun. The beam of light could be seen through and it was a pale blue in color. If drivers behind me or in oncoming vehicles saw it, I cannot say. No one seemed to show it if they did. One thing for sure is that I saw it.

As the road wound first one way and then the other, the end of the beam never left the left front of the hood of the car. There were times when the sunís position was to the right of me and the beam had to go across the hood but the end of the beam was always on the left of the hood where it touched. It never touched the hood on the right. The last few feet of the beam of light always curved to accommodate it. Most of the time the position of the sun in relation to the car was ahead and to the left of me. As I drove West the sun went lower and lower on the horizon because it was in the process of setting.

As the sun continued to lower on the horizon from time to time mountain ridges were on the left of me and the sun became hidden behind them. It seemed these ridges were intercepting the beam of light because it was no longer visible but when there were valleys between the ridges and the sun was visible, the beam of light was back. It seemed almost like the string on a kite had been tied to the left side of the hood of the car. The sun being the kite and the light beam being the string.

As I arrived at the South side of Oneonta the sun fell behind the horizon and I was in the city traffic. Still the beam was there until I finally turned North and then the sun and the beam were both gone.

In the 80 years of my life I have never before experienced anything like this. I have spent many hours driving in my life time. I am unaware of any scientific explanation for such a thing. I donít believe I am a superstitious person. I am not the most well educated person in the world but at the same time I believe I am far from being ignorant either. I have never heard anyone else relating such an experience nor have I ever read of one. I cannot explain it. Is there anyone who can? If so, I want to hear it.
