My Daily Grind

The Daily Grind

Wake up about 4 A.M.
My dreams I leave behind
As I crawl out of bed
I start my daily grind.

I stumble into my computer room
Turn on the light
Fall into my office chair
Gosh, I must look a sight

I turn on the computer
Drag out my blood pressure machine
I push the button that starts the process
Top is high bottom is too, know what I mean?

Got diabetes “number two”
Get out the kit
Stab my finger with a needle
To get it to bleed a bit

My sugar is outta danger
Metformin is holding Sugar at bay
Now to don my socks
Boy my feet look far away

My fingers don’t work like they ustah
Seem to have a mind of their own
Next is my elastic knee brace
Got it on upside down.

Got it right
Keeps that knee from giving in
Little surer of my stride
Don’t want to fall again

Hurt my back the other day
I got one of those corset things
To control the pain
Looks like I have on water wings

I sit a few minutes to rest
Seems that old stamina’s gone
Now it’s time to finish up
An slip my jeans on.

I put on my jeans
While sitting down
Used to do it standing
While dancing all around

Slip my shirt over my head
No buttons or buttonholes
Fingers don’t work right
Doncha know

You may think this bunk
But this is how I start each day
As I write this poem
One thing I hafta say

I thank the Lord
For giving me another day
To kid and laugh with my old cronies
And let this old guy play.
