The Incredible Chicken Roll-up…
By Chuck Dishno
5/6/14

Before moving to Montana, 25 years ago, Roz and I lived on a 5 acre parcel in Clovis, California, a suburb of Fresno. We had lots of room to roam and even had several horses. We nicknamed our place “Road Apple Ranch”

The place bordering our barbed wire fence was another 5 acre parcel. The man who owned it was a building contractor and also had several horses. He had a fenced off place behind his house where he raised chickens. The chickens were never a problem and kept to their own yard. He had a steel garden shed where the chickens roosted.

One day I was in my backyard cleaning my swimming pool when a terrific wind storm came up. It was kicking up lots of dust and debris. I was watching the ominous clouds when a huge black cloud dropped what some say was a small tornado out of the bottom. It hit the ground across the road from my friend’s house and I could hear the chickens squawking as they headed for the safety of the shed. A few seconds later I watched as the mini tornado picked up the shed, chickens and all and begin to roll it across the acre of pasture between his fence and mine. It picked up speed as it was rolling spewing out white feathers and squawking chickens. By the time it reached about 50 feet from my fence it had discharged all the chickens and was rolled up like 36 inch culvert.

It wasn’t long before things were back to normal and the chickens had made their way back home minus their shelter. The only thing that happened to my place was a lot of dirt and debris floating in my pool along with many white chicken feathers.

Wow, where is Colonel Sanders when you need him?
